Intelligent children
In the current study, Kanazawa argues that humans are evolutionarily designed to be conservative, caring mostly about their family and friends, and being liberal, caring about an indefinite number of genetically unrelated strangers they never meet or interact with, is evolutionarily novel. So more intelligent children may be more likely to grow up to be liberals.I dont care if you’re liberal, conservative, Christian, Muslim or a damn rock at the bottom of a river. This article states that progressive social growth is BASED on going against mainstream ideals regarding more common social structures. […] It makes me ill that the majority of people are robotic and driven by instincts based on power and control games, without ever considering individuality based on compassion.
I’ve added my own emphases to a poignant excerpt from a blog I follow, Open-Minded Skepticism. And the article it’s quoting above is filled with even more insightful stuff, too. I think it’s interesting to note how, though humans are naturally conservative/survivalist, I would say nature itself has literally changed so much as to make it natural to be liberal, now.
What I mean is that the physical and social environment that humans did the majority of our evolving in—from apes until the industrial revolution, say—was based around the survival of the fittest. Nowadays, modern technology has freed us from that burden, so we are now able to sustain ourselves easily. Given this context, it actually becomes more natural to be liberal because to devote ourselves to causes which are already being accounted for is not only irrational, it is by definition wasteful.
(But is living rationally the only/best way to live?)
