While this trailer is pretty sensational—especially considering the film’s grave implications—Roger & Me (Michael Moore, 1989) is indelible.
It points the finger/camera at big business, for sure, but there’s something ephemerally odd and fascinating and foreboding about seeing so many people noticeably trying their best to formulate their own coherent, honest thoughts… and just coming up so unbelievably short.
Whether it be a corporate spokesperson uncomfortably evading questions once their argument seems lost, or a destitute evictee unabashedly enticing sympathy once their own excuses run short, people seem to have a genuinely difficult time dealing with their own thoughts, and coming to terms with their own faults.
I know I must have some wiring mixed up somewhere, but I’m actually endlessly thankful (if at times embarrassed/alienated) that I’m better able to take criticism than complement. Thinking “I’m wrong” is still, after all, thinking, and if there’s one sentiment Roger & Me conferred in me, it’s that I’m extremely lucky to be able to do this (so liberally).
